Rolls-Royce Spirit of Innovation aircraft broke world electric speed record

Rolls-Royce Sets New Electric Speed Record

Phill O’Dell, director of flight operations at Rolls-Royce, expressed enthusiasm for the achievement, stating, "It’s a great aeroplane to go and break records with." He emphasized the significance of this milestone in demonstrating "the future and the next steps for electric aviation."

Matheu Parr, customer business director at Rolls-Royce Electrical, highlighted the importance of the achievement in advancing technology, "The key thing about breaking the record is about demonstrating how fast this technology is going and therefore how soon it’s going to be in all our lives. This technology offers us the opportunity to start traveling in a really net zero way."

The scene for supersonic planes is becoming increasingly vibrant in 2024, with the $8 million R&D program joint funded by the UK Government and Rolls-Royce being a pivotal moment for the industry. Accel saw the collaboration of several key players, including Electroflight, and YASA, contributing significantly to the success of the Spirit of Innovation.

"Electrification of flight is an important part of our sustainability strategy as we aim for net zero carbon by 2050," said Rob Watson, director of Rolls-Royce Electrical. The Accel project not only set a new standard for electric aircraft but also positioned Rolls-Royce as a frontrunner in the urban air mobility market.

The Spirit of Innovation achieved a top speed of 387.4 mph (623 km/h), breaking the world speed record for an electric aircraft that stood for four years. This monumental feat was described as a herald of the "third age of aviation," solidifying electric aviation's place in the industry.

The development of the Spirit of Innovation, part of the Accel project since 2018, culminated in a record-breaking flight over Boscombe Down in Wiltshire, UK, in November 2021. Featuring the most power-dense propulsion battery pack ever assembled in aerospace and a 400kW (500 hp) electric powertrain, this modified sports kit plane has marked a historic milestone in aviation.

Rolls-Royce's Spirit of Innovation not only broke the electric speed record but did so "by a phenomenal amount," setting three new world records and showcasing the potent capabilities of clean, competitive power solutions. This achievement underscores the aircraft's status as the "world’s fastest all-electric aircraft," promising an electrifying future for aviation.
